You Can't Pass This Up!

John proposed to Elizabeth on St. Valentine's Day in 1999. The story unfolds...

John and Elizabeth were enjoying a romantic Valentine weekend in St. Louis which culminated with tickets to see Les Miserables at the Fox Theatre. Elizabeth had some Valentine gifts for John and he suggested that they take them along to exchange at dinner after the play. John, being the gentlemen that he is, offered to carry the bag of gifts (little did Elizabeth know, he had hidden the ring in the gift bag).

Well, Les Mis is a long sthow and the first act alone was 1 hour 45 minutes! Our usually laid-back John was becoming anxious as he told Elizabeth that they would have to leave the show for the restaurant and miss the second half of the show (to which she laughed, "yeah, right"). But being the flexible person she is, they went outside and waited for A LONG TIME for a cab. Apprently cabs don't just drive by every few minutes like in Chicago. And even after calling for a cab, it wasn't until Elizabeth was able to flag one down that happened to be passing by that they actually had a form of transportation to the restaurant. So away they went as John worried away that the restaurant would be closed before they got there.

Once at the restaurant, and after ordering a few martinis to calm their nerves, Elizabeth and John noticed another couple with some delectable desserts. After dinner John asked the waiter to see the dessert tray. The waiter returned, set the tray down and said, "You can't pass this up." There was the ring box and a card (hand-made by John of course) asking Elizabeth to marry John. Elizabeth replied with, "I'd love to" as the wait staff watched the proposal from the doorway into the dining room.

John and Elizabeth closed down the restaurant and as they left, the wait staff (the only other people left in the restaurant) applauded for the happy couple.
